History of Sri Lanka

 


The island of Sri Lanka is so-called after the ancestors of the Sinhalese is natures gift to the Sinhalese who have made it famous in history as the Dhammadipa the island of the Dhamma. It is also the cradle of the culture of the Sinhalese. In ancient times the traders of western countries visited the island in search of gems , spices ivory and peacocks. Mariners at sea often sought the safe havens in the island. Its strategic location in the Indian ocean first attracted invaders from south India and later from distant Europe as well.
